Residence Athens

For millennia, the Aegean has shaped landscapes and people alike: through the gentleness of its dunes, the eternal ebb and flow of its waves. In a modernist residence near Athens, this creative force has now found its way into the architecture.
Spanning floor-to-ceiling heights of over five metres, an organic cantilevered staircase in oak unfolds, its organic ornamentation defying any geometric rigidity. Curved lines, soft transitions and an impression of the sea’s movement have been captured in the material. The design follows no rigid grid, but rather the rhythm of nature.
The oak has been finished with pigmented oils in subtle, interblending shades that echo and deepen the warm sand and brick tones of the residence. Light and surface enter into a quiet dialogue that alters the staircase’s sculptural effect from hour to hour.
Here, form does not follow function. It follows nature.
