Bauhaus villa Tübingen

Near Tübingen, a university town with a centuries-old tradition of creative thinking and craftsmanship, the Bauhaus philosophy finds its most coherent expression in a modern villa. Two folding staircases form its artisanal centrepiece.
Immediately commanding attention is the straight-flight staircase on the ground floor: without any wall fixings, it stands as a sculptural solitary, appearing to float in the very heart of the room.
Gravity here seems altogether suspended. A second, half-turned staircase descends to the home’s fitness room, fixed to a single wall, yet no less free-floating, and furnished with double-sided full-glass balustrades and a satin-finish stainless steel handrail, lending the composition a consistently refined formal language.
Both staircases were crafted from core-smoked oak and finished with pigmented oils. The resulting warmth and depth of the timber lend a sensuous quality to the rather austere Bauhaus style. The glass balustrades accentuate the structural lightness of the structures and allow the eye to pass unimpeded through the room.
The union of traditional craftsmanship and the finest materials, which is a hallmark of markiewicz, finds its most consistent expression here: two staircases, one spirit. Contemporary in design, timeless in character.
